In a surprising move, the Cincinnati Reds have re-signed former catcher Luke Maile, who was recently released by the Kansas City Royals. With the Reds facing a gap in their catching depth following Tyler Stephenson’s oblique injury, the team acted quickly to bring Maile back on a one-year, $4.5 million contract.
Maile, 34, had an impressive spring training with the Royals, hitting .333/.391/.571 in 10 games with two doubles, a home run, and even a stolen base. Despite this strong performance, he was released, and the Reds seized the opportunity to bring him back, bolstering their catching depth behind starter Jose Trevino.

The Reds had decided not to exercise Maile’s club option for 2025 last offseason, but with the injury to Stephenson, the Reds felt a veteran presence like Maile’s would be crucial. Known for his solid defensive abilities, Maile has been reliable behind the plate and provides depth while the team waits for Stephenson’s recovery.
Although Maile struggled offensively in 2024, his past contributions with the Reds and his defense behind the plate have made him a valuable addition. He is expected to start the season with the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Bats, until Stephenson returns, providing necessary support until the regular starter is fully healthy.
This deal solidifies the Reds’ catching depth for the 2025 season, giving them a proven backup at a crucial time, and allowing them to maintain flexibility while their starting catcher heals.
