REPORT: Texas Rangers Double Down on Veteran Arm, Lock in Star Pitcher with New $40 Million Extension After Option Declined

The Texas Rangers have made a bold and decisive move to retain one of their most experienced and clutch postseason arms.

After veteran right-hander Nathan Eovaldi declined his $20 million player option for the 2025 season, Rangers President of Baseball Operations and GM Chris Young wasted no time ensuring the ace remained in Arlington. On Thursday, the club announced they have signed Eovaldi to a new 2-year, $40 million contract extension, doubling the value of his previous deal and reaffirming their belief in the 34-year-old’s continued impact on the mound.

“Once Nathan made the decision to test the market, we knew we had to act quickly,” Young said. “His leadership, work ethic, and ability to perform on the biggest stage are things you can’t replace. This new deal reflects his value to our clubhouse and our rotation.”

Eovaldi, who helped lead the Rangers to a World Series title in 2023, has been a cornerstone of the team’s recent success. His mix of veteran poise and power pitching has made him a reliable force atop the rotation. Despite some injury concerns over the years, he’s proven he can still deliver when it matters most.

In 2024, Eovaldi pitched to a 3.42 ERA over 154 innings, with 162 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.14. He’s continued to show exceptional command and an ability to get out of jams — something that’s only grown more valuable for a contending Rangers squad.

“I’ve loved my time here in Texas,” Eovaldi said in a statement. “This is where I want to be, and I’m thrilled to keep chasing championships with this group.”

With the new deal in place, Eovaldi remains a key figure in the Rangers’ plans as they continue to build around a battle-tested core of veterans and rising stars.
