BREAKING: St. Louis Cardinals Bring Back Veteran Star With 2-Year, $38 Million Contract Extension

April 25, 2025 — St. Louis, MO

The St. Louis Cardinals are bringing back one of their franchise cornerstones. The team announced today that they’ve agreed to a 2-year, $38 million contract extension with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, ensuring that the six-time All-Star remains in St. Louis through the 2026 season.

Goldschmidt, 37, became a free agent after the 2024 campaign, but both sides had expressed mutual interest in a reunion. Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak called the agreement “a win for the organization and a win for a player who still represents the best of Cardinals baseball.”

“Paul is a leader in our clubhouse, and his work ethic continues to set the standard,” Mozeliak said. “This extension reflects what he’s meant to this team and what we believe he can still bring over the next two seasons.”

Goldschmidt posted a solid .268/.342/.440 slash line in 2024 with 23 home runs and 82 RBIs. Though no longer in his MVP form from 2022, he remains one of the league’s most reliable defenders at first base and a respected veteran presence in the lineup.

The deal reportedly includes performance bonuses and a full no-trade clause, solidifying Goldschmidt’s commitment to finishing his career in a Cardinals uniform.

“I never wanted to leave,” Goldschmidt said. “St. Louis has felt like home since the day I arrived, and I’m grateful for the chance to keep wearing this jersey.”
