The New York Yankees have landed a major bullpen reinforcement, as two-time All-Star closer David Bednar has officially chosen the Bronx as his next destination.
In a bold midseason move, Bednar joins the Yankees after finalizing a deal that brings him over from the Pittsburgh Pirates. While the financial details are still being finalized, the veteran closer—under contract through 2026 for a total of $87 million—is expected to play a key role in tightening the Yankees’ bullpen for their postseason push.
Bednar, 30, had reportedly drawn interest from several contenders, but ultimately made it clear he wanted to join the Yankees. According to team and league sources, Bednar waived his limited no-trade rights to facilitate the move to New York.
“I’m excited to join a historic organization like the Yankees,” Bednar said in a statement. “The opportunity to compete for a championship in front of that fanbase—it’s everything I’ve worked for.”
While Bednar struggled at times over the last year—including a demotion to Triple-A—his high-velocity fastball and All-Star pedigree remain enticing. In 2022 and 2023, he was one of the most dominant closers in the National League. Even with a difficult 2024 season behind him, scouts still praise his stuff, noting his upper-90s fastball and swing-and-miss curveball.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed confidence that Bednar’s best baseball is ahead of him. “We’ve had our eyes on David for some time,” Cashman said. “His competitiveness, his fire, and his ability to perform under pressure make him a perfect fit for New York.”
In exchange, the Pirates receive a trio of Yankees prospects, including Double-A pitcher Brock Selvidge and infielder Jared Serna, both of whom rank inside the team’s top 20. While some see the return as modest, the Yankees were able to keep their top-tier talent intact, betting on Bednar’s resurgence under the lights of Yankee Stadium.
For the Pirates, the move signals a continued focus on future development, while the Yankees are clearly shifting into win-now mode. Bednar is expected to slot into a high-leverage role immediately, setting up or sharing closing duties with Clay Holmes.
With the Yankees already leading the AL East and eyeing a deep playoff run, the addition of Bednar could be the final piece in their championship puzzle.
