The Cincinnati Reds could be on the verge of making one of the most headline-grabbing moves of the 2025 MLB season.
Amid reports that the St. Louis Cardinals are preparing to move on from superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado, insiders now believe the Reds are a surprise contender to land the $260 million infielder in a blockbuster trade that would shake up the entire National League Central.
Arenado, who has long been a thorn in Cincinnati’s side as a division rival, is once again the focus of trade speculation. ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently suggested that the Cardinals could finally part ways with the All-Star after attempts to deal him over the winter stalled. While Arenado’s contract — which pays him $32 million in 2025, $27 million in 2026, and $15 million in 2027 — makes him a tough financial fit for some teams, the Reds are viewed as a potential suitor thanks to their rising young core and surprising early-season success.
The Reds have been aggressive in recent seasons, showing a willingness to mix youth with veteran impact talent. Acquiring Arenado would give them an elite defensive third baseman and a proven power bat to slot behind Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer, instantly elevating them into the NL playoff conversation.
While Arenado has a full no-trade clause, sources suggest he would consider waiving it for the right team. If Cincinnati continues to surge in the standings and shows serious intent at the deadline, they could become a realistic destination. The Reds also have a strong farm system, with enough depth to offer St. Louis attractive prospects without gutting their future.
Arenado is off to an excellent start to the season, hitting for average and showing improved plate discipline. Despite the Cardinals’ struggles, he remains one of the most respected and feared infielders in baseball — and the Reds’ front office may now see him as the final piece to fuel a deep October run.
