The Texas Rangers have emerged victorious in a competitive trade pursuit, acquiring veteran closer Kenley Jansen from the Los Angeles Angels in a $10 million deal that edges out both the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, who were also in the mix.
Sources confirm that Texas secured the 37-year-old right-hander in exchange for a package of minor league talent, bringing a much-needed boost to the back end of their bullpen. Jansen, who signed a one-year deal with the Angels this past offseason, was one of the top rental arms on the market and drew serious interest from multiple contenders seeking ninth-inning stability.
The Rangers’ bullpen had been one of the team’s few weak points this season, especially after losing their closer in the offseason. Jansen brings with him a wealth of experience, including 424 career saves, three All-Star selections, and a World Series title with the Dodgers. His signature cutter remains effective, and while he’s no longer the lights-out force he once was, he’s still more than capable of shutting down games in high-leverage spots.
ESPN’s David Schoenfield previously listed the Rangers, Red Sox, and Cubs as top suitors for Jansen, noting that all three teams had closer concerns. Texas ultimately outbid both, landing the seasoned reliever in a deal that signals their intention to push deep into October.

Interestingly, the Red Sox had let Jansen walk just months ago in free agency, and while they showed interest in a reunion, the Rangers’ offer reportedly stood out for its mix of immediate need and prospect value.
As for the Angels, the move signals a willingness to pivot toward a potential rebuild if their early success fades. The return package includes at least one prospect from the Rangers’ Top 30, with full trade details expected soon.
