In a stunning twist, quarterback Nico Iamaleava has decided to remain with the Tennessee Volunteers, reversing his initial decision to transfer.
Iamaleava, who entered the transfer portal following a highly publicized standoff over his NIL deal and concerns about Tennessee’s offensive system, was reportedly on the verge of transferring to UCLA. FS1’s Colin Cowherd even broke the news that Iamaleava was heading to Los Angeles to join the Bruins — a report later confirmed by Bruce Feldman.
However, sources close to the program now say Iamaleava has had a change of heart.
After further discussions with head coach Josh Heupel and a reevaluation of his future, the former five-star recruit has opted to stay in Knoxville and recommit to the Vols. While tensions earlier this spring raised questions about Iamaleava’s long-term fit in Heupel’s offense, both sides appear to have reached common ground — with an eye on maximizing the quarterback’s NFL potential.

“This was never just about money,” a source close to Iamaleava’s camp said. “Nico wanted to be in the right system and environment to grow. After conversations with Coach Heupel and the staff, he believes Tennessee is still that place.”
Iamaleava’s return is a major boost for a Tennessee team that was left with just Jake Merklinger and incoming freshman George MacIntyre at quarterback. With Iamaleava back in the fold, the Vols are once again positioned to compete at a high level in the SEC.
While the initial departure stirred controversy — and even drew criticism from fans and analysts — his return brings closure to a wild offseason saga.
Iamaleava is now expected to retake his spot atop the depth chart heading into fall camp, and with his renewed commitment to the program, the Vols’ offense may be in for a resurgence.
One thing’s for sure: all eyes will be on Knoxville this season.
