In a shocking twist to what was thought to be a done deal, Gold Glove shortstop Willy Adames has officially reversed his commitment to the San Francisco Giants and is instead signing with the Cincinnati Reds — a team that wasn’t even considered a frontrunner earlier in the offseason.
Adames had previously agreed to a seven-year, $182 million contract with the Giants in December, but after a late push from Cincinnati and some deep soul-searching, the 29-year-old shortstop chose the Reds as his new home.
“I gave my word to the Giants, and I respect them a lot,” Adames said. “But after talking with the Reds and thinking about the kind of impact I want to make, I realized Cincinnati was where I truly wanted to be.”
Sources close to the situation say the Reds’ front office made a heartfelt and compelling case, emphasizing Adames’ potential role as a leader for their young, up-and-coming team. That message struck a chord with the veteran infielder, who cited the organization’s energy and direction as key factors in his decision.
“It wasn’t about being the biggest market or the flashiest choice,” Adames said. “It was about fit, culture, and the chance to grow with a team that’s hungry to win. The Reds gave me that feeling.”
Reds GM Nick Krall said the addition of Adames marks a turning point for the franchise.
“Willy brings elite defense, power, and leadership — but more than that, he brings a winning mentality,” Krall said. “This is a huge moment for us.”
The decision leaves the Giants stunned and scrambling. After believing they had secured their long-term shortstop, San Francisco now has a major hole to fill just weeks before Opening Day.
Adames, who had also drawn strong interest from the New York Yankees earlier this offseason, surprised many by choosing a smaller market over the prestige and pressure of franchises like New York and San Francisco. But to him, it was never about the headlines.
“At the end of the day, I wanted to go somewhere I could build something special,” he said. “And I believe that’s what we’re doing in Cincinnati.”
