South Carolina’s Dawn Staley Bounces Back After Title Loss by Signing Transfer Star, Expressing Excitement Over New Addition

April 8, 2025

Following their tough 82-59 defeat to UConn in the national championship game, Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks have secured a major boost with the commitment of Ta’Niya Latson, a standout guard from Florida State.

Latson, the nation’s leading scorer this season with an average of 25.1 points per game, has been a key player for the Seminoles. She led her team in scoring for 22 of 31 games, including a 40-point performance against Virginia Tech. Latson also averaged 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. Despite Florida State’s early exit from the NCAA tournament, where Latson posted 28 and 30 points in the first and second rounds, she solidified her place as one of the top players in women’s college basketball.

Coach Staley, eager to add such a talented player, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her excitement, writing: “A birdie just flew in the nest!!” accompanied by two rooster emojis.

Latson will reunite with Raven Johnson, her former high school teammate, who has also decided to return to South Carolina next season instead of declaring for the WNBA draft.
