The New York Yankees have officially found their new leadoff hitter—and it’s not who anyone expected. Austin Wells has stepped into the role and is already making fans forget about Gleyber Torres’ offensive contributions at the top of the order.
For years, Torres provided the Yankees with a steady presence in the leadoff spot, especially during his late-season surge in 2024, when he posted a .363 OBP in August and .387 in September/October. However, after New York let him walk in free agency, Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers, leaving a major hole at the top of the lineup.
Instead of searching externally for a replacement, the Yankees have turned to Wells, a power-hitting catcher who has embraced the leadoff role. The move seemed unorthodox at first, but Wells has quickly silenced any doubts. His performance this spring has been nothing short of electric, crushing three home runs and recording a 1.209 OPS in just 22 at-bats.

While Anthony Volpe was initially expected to take over as the Yankees’ leadoff man, his development is still ongoing. In the meantime, Wells has emerged as a perfect fit, showcasing both patience and the ability to launch long-distance home runs.
