The Minnesota Vikings have officially signed veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill, bringing in an experienced presence to support 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.
Tannehill, a former first-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2012, had a Pro Bowl season with the Tennessee Titans in 2019. After sitting out the 2024 season, the 36-year-old signal-caller is making his NFL return with Minnesota.
The move comes as the Vikings seek a reliable backup and mentor for McCarthy, ensuring they have an experienced option in case of injury or struggles during his rookie season.
Tannehill last played in 2023, completing 64.8% of his passes for 1,616 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions before an ankle injury sidelined him. He was eventually replaced by rookie Will Levis, leading to his departure from Tennessee.

Tannehill’s Connection to Minnesota
One key factor in the deal is Tannehill’s connection to McCarthy—they share the same agent, which likely helped facilitate the signing.
Vikings insider Ben Goessling previously hinted at this possibility, stating, “A veteran QB was on the Vikings’ radar, and Tannehill was a logical fit given his experience and ties to McCarthy.”
With Tannehill now in Minnesota, the Vikings have solidified their quarterback room as they prepare for the upcoming season.
