SIGNIFICANT SETBACK: Avalanche Key Veteran Announces Departure, Leaving Team Unbalanced

The Colorado Avalanche will be without veteran defenseman Josh Manson for several weeks after the 33-year-old sustained an upper-body injury against the Calgary Flames. As of March 19, Manson is expected to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks while recovering.

This marks the 17th injury of Manson’s career and his third of the season. He previously suffered an upper-body injury in November, though head coach Jared Bednar confirmed that this latest issue is unrelated.

“It’s a different injury,” Bednar explained. “He’s getting other opinions and trying to determine the best rehab approach.”

Despite the setback, Manson will accompany the team on their upcoming Canadian road trip alongside Captain Gabe Landeskog. With just three road trips left in the regular season, Bednar wants as many players as possible traveling with the team, even if they are unable to play.

“We’ll bring everybody that’s able to skate or contribute in some way,” Bednar said.

The recent trade deadline acquisition of Erik Johnson is proving valuable, as he will help fill the void left by Manson. Johnson and Keaton Middleton are expected to rotate in his absence.

Fellow trade deadline addition Ryan Lindgren, who has shared limited ice time with Manson, acknowledged the impact of his absence.

“He plays a tough, physical game,” Lindgren said. “Losing a guy like that is never easy, but we have players who can step up. Hopefully, he’ll be back soon.”

Bednar expects to have more details on Manson’s recovery timeline later today. This season, Manson has recorded 14 assists and one goal in 48 games. The Avalanche hope to have him back in time for the playoffs, particularly if they face the Dallas Stars in the first round, where his experience would be crucial.
