The Atlanta Braves have once again made headlines in free agency, addressing a crucial need in their bullpen with a major signing. The team has officially secured veteran reliever David Robertson, bringing stability and experience to a bullpen that has been under scrutiny.
Robertson, who declined his $7 million mutual option with the Texas Rangers earlier in the offseason, remained one of the top available arms on the market. The 39-year-old right-hander has continued to perform at a high level, posting a 3.00 ERA across 72 innings last season while striking out 99 and walking just 27. Since the start of the 2022 season, Robertson has maintained a stellar 2.82 ERA and a 1.154 WHIP in 188 appearances, proving he still has plenty left in the tank.
Despite his age, Robertson’s durability and effectiveness have remained intact, in part due to his lighter workload following Tommy John surgery in 2019. Having spent time with multiple contenders in recent years, including the Cubs, Mets, and Rangers, Robertson’s postseason experience makes him a valuable addition to a Braves bullpen that needed reinforcement.
Atlanta’s relief corps struggled at times last season, leading to speculation about further upgrades even after the signing of former Braves closer Craig Kimbrel. While Kimbrel brings familiarity, there were concerns about relying too heavily on him. With Robertson in the mix, the Braves now have another high-leverage option to solidify the late innings.

The move underscores Alex Anthopoulos’ commitment to fielding a championship-caliber team. The Braves are already viewed as strong contenders for another deep postseason run, and this latest acquisition only strengthens their case. The deal is expected to be finalized pending a physical, and Robertson should be ready to contribute from Opening Day.
