The trade deadline saw a whirlwind of moves, with some familiar faces leaving the Bruins, including Brad Marchand, Brandon Carlo, and Charlie Coyle. However, the focus is now on the new arrivals, including defenseman Henri Jokiharju, who came to Boston from Buffalo in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round draft pick.
Jokiharju, a seven-year veteran, was brought in to help strengthen the Bruins’ defense, especially after injuries to key players like Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm. The 24-year-old, who had spent six seasons with the Sabres, was quickly paired with Nikita Zadorov on the Bruins’ top defensive unit, and the two have shown early chemistry.
“I think we keep the game simple, and he’s a great defenseman,” Jokiharju said of Zadorov. “Every team wants a player like him, so it’s nice to play with him.” Jokiharju also contributed an assist in Boston’s recent game against Tampa Bay.
As a free agent at the end of the season, Jokiharju was aware he might be traded after a season in Buffalo where his ice time decreased. “I wasn’t getting much ice time, and they didn’t offer me an extension,” he explained. “No hard feelings—it’s just business, but it’s great to be here.”
The transition to Boston has been easier with the help of his former Sabres teammate, Casey Mittelstadt. “That was a big help for sure,” Jokiharju said. “The guys in the locker room have been great too. They made the transition as easy as possible.”

Bruins head coach Joe Sacco has already taken note of Jokiharju’s contributions. “He helps us come out of our zone cleaner and makes good first passes on our breakouts,” Sacco said. “We’re working with him on his coverage, but his impact has been positive.”
Although there hasn’t been any discussion about a contract extension yet, Jokiharju is open to talks before the free agency period opens on July 1. For now, he’s excited about the new chapter in his career. “It’s a fresh start, a new life, hockey-wise,” Jokiharju shared.
As he continues to adjust to his new environment, Jokiharju is focused on helping the Bruins strengthen their blue line and contribute to the team’s playoff push.
