Brad Marchand was recently asked whether he would consider rejoining the Boston Bruins as a free agent this summer. His response was somewhat unexpected.
Acknowledging that his departure from Boston wasn’t on the best terms, Marchand shared that the NHL is ultimately a business, and it was clear that parting ways was an emotional experience for him.
Marchand was asked if his affection for Boston, the only team he’s ever played for, was enough to overlook the way management treated him when it came time to renegotiate his contract after years of playing on a team-friendly deal.
Could Marchand Return to the Bruins?
Conor Ryan of the Boston Globe tweeted that Marchand was questioned about the possibility of returning to Boston after his trade to the Florida Panthers. As a pending unrestricted free agent, Marchand will have the freedom to sign with any team.
Marchand responded, “I mean, I can’t say for sure. I guess it depends on how I feel about things. I don’t know what the future holds, especially during the summer.” He added, “I know it didn’t happen at this moment, but things might change later. We’ll see, and I’m sure we’ll talk down the road, but I’m not sure where it goes from here.”
This statement is noteworthy, especially considering the circumstances surrounding his departure. A significant salary gap led to his trade from the Bruins, making it hard to imagine them having a change of heart as Marchand weighs offers from other teams, many of which are expected to exceed the $6.3 million the Bruins reportedly were willing to offer for three years.
Marchand reiterated that his love for Boston would never fade, but whether that’s enough to mend past issues remains to be seen.
