Italy’s Jasmine Paolini announced her withdrawal from the Ningbo Open where she was set to be the second seed.
Jasmine Paolini has enjoyed a formidable year of tennis on both the singles and doubles circuits – form she’s continued into the Asian swing.
The Italian was seeded third in Beijing after Iga Swiatek’s withdrawal but could only reach the third round, losing out to Magda Linette.
Contrasting fortunes saw Paolini clinch the doubles titles with partner Sara Errani and therefore move into the top 10 of the doubles rankings – she is the only active player to be in the top 10 of both singles and doubles.
In Wuhan, her singles run was more successful as she reached the last eight, losing out to eventual finalist and home favorite Qinwen Zheng.
Jasmine Paolini withdraws from Ningbo Open
A stunning and busy year has ultimately taken a toll on the Italian number one as she announced her withdrawal from the Ningbo Open.
Having secured her spot in the WTA Finals – Paolini’s main goal for the year – she can afford to take some time off to recover before the event in Saudi Arabia.
After the tournament announced both her and Emma Navarro’s withdrawal, Paolini shared a statement on X.
“Unfortunately, I have to pull out of the Ningbo Open. I’ve had such amazing weeks here in China, and the fans have been incredible.
“I’m so thankful and happy for all the love and support I’ve received and all the wonderful people I’ve met. I promise I’ll do my best to come back.”
What a year for Jasmine Paolini
Somewhat of a late bloomer, the 28-year-old picked up Olympic gold and maiden WTA 1000 title this year, along with a major rankings boost.
The crafty Italian made back-to-back Grand Slam final appearances at the French Open and Wimbledon, losing to both Swiatek and Barbora Krejcikova.
A clever and joyful presence on the WTA circuit, Paolini has forced her name into the conversation, while also demonstrating her consistency throughout.
