When Michigan played Fresno State on Saturday, rumors abounded about who may start for the Wolverines, but no one was entirely sure who would really start. Sherrone Moore announced minutes prior to kickoff that Davis Warren had proven he deserved the starting job and would lead the Bulldogs, but the coach also mentioned Alex Orji will play a significant part.
Orji had nine snaps at the end of the game. The 2024 season began with a play-action pass from Orji to Donovan Edwards that resulted in a three-yard touchdown. The majority of people in the building thought Orji would be the football’s quarterback. However, Sherrone Moore revealed to Jon Jansen on “Inside Michigan Football” that Orji throwing the football was always the intended outcome, even though everyone else believed differently.
The first time Moore entered the room, he would perform a play action and throw the object. This was part of our plan, Moore explained. “I thought he would be a lightning bolt; they would say he would be running the ball,” the player said. “He did a great job of calling the play, and Donovan did a great job of making the catch.”
On Saturday, Orji attempted two throws; Tyler Morris was the recipient of one touchdown, and the second was a miss. He also gained 32 yards on five carries. Orji did a terrific job in his capacity, according to Moore. However, Michigan intends to use Orji more and more in the future.
Moore commented, “I thought he did a good job in the role.” “I believe he had thirteen [nine] snaps, and when he did run the ball, I believe he averaged roughly six yards per carry.” He did an excellent job. throw a touchdown pass, of course. I felt he did a pretty decent job, but he will have a large package to what he does throughout games, and it will expand and grow every time.”
Maintaining a quarterback’s confidence and rhythm is a concern as they rotate. Moore, though, is unconcerned about that. He claims that going ahead, they will be able to judge when it is appropriate to use Orji’s skill set and when it is not.
Moore stated, “I believe there will be a rhythm.” You’ll probably pick up on the rhythm. Additionally, there will be some scripted material, but we’ll effectively develop a rhythm of knowing when to utilize him and when not to. Maintain a rhythm for Davis and, if he’s participating in the game, for Orji. Make sure that’s what we’re doing for our group.
