Patrick Mahomes’ father pleads guilty to DWI charge in Texas
According to documents, Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, entered a guilty plea on Tuesday to his third driving while intoxicated offense.
The 54-year-old was indicted in April after being detained and charged in February.
He filed his plea on Tuesday, according to records in Smith County, Texas.
Joseph D. Murphy, the lawyer for Mahomes Sr., said to NBC News that Mahomes submitted a guilty plea in his case today in accordance with a formal plea agreement.
Murphy stated, “We think that the actions our client took to improve his life helped us achieve a plea recommendation for probation. He is now living a sober life.”
Mahomes agreed to a plea deal that will see him serve five years of probation and one year of rigorous supervision, according to KETK, an NBC affiliate in East Texas.
This was Mahomes Sr.’s third arrest for DWI.
Based on court documents from Smith County, Texas, he was sentenced to 40 days of jail time to be served on weekends after being arrested in 2018.
According to KETK, District Judge Kerry Russell stated in court on Tuesday that he had also been arrested in South Dakota in September of 2008.
On September 23, he is expected to be sentenced.
Days before his son led the Chiefs to a third Super Bowl triumph at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Mahomes Sr. was arrested in February.
Like his son, Mahomes Sr. pursued a career in sports. For the first part of his career, he pitched for the Minnesota Twins before switching teams, and he played in major league baseball for 11 seasons.
