Rafael Nadal shares what he’s finding ‘difficult’ at Swedish Open as he provides fitness update
The legendary Spaniard is getting ready to compete in his third and perhaps last Olympic Games after not playing since the French Open.
In an effort to better safeguard his body, he even skipped the Wimbledon Championships in order to return to Roland Garros and contend for another Olympic medal.
In order to improve his sharpness for playing alongside Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s doubles at the Olympics, the 37-year-old is competing in the doubles competition with Casper Ruud.
About his level of fitness, what did Rafael Nadal say?
A few days prior to the Bastad Open, Nadal traveled to Sweden in order to acclimate to the weather before playing.
For the first time since 2005, the 22-time Grand Slam champion voiced some reservations about the court and balls being used before competition, despite being happy with his physical condition.
Alright. Alright, sort of. I’m feeling well enough that my presence here is a sign of my wellbeing. I am happy to be in Bastad right now, even if I have no idea what the future holds,” he said to reporters.
“I think the conditions are a little challenging for me, so it will be a difficult week.” The ball isn’t doing anything to help because the court is rather hefty. However, that’s just part of the game, and I had a solid practice month, no question about it.
Rafael Nadal’s opponent at the Bastad Open is who?
Nadal will take on Leo Borg, the son of 11-time Grand Slam winner Bjorn Borg, in the opening match of his first Bastad Open campaign in 19 years.
With a wildcard into his home tournament, the 21-year-old is prepared to take on his childhood hero.
Nadal is thrilled to be playing on clay again and is looking forward to improving his form and self-assurance in time for the Olympics.
The former world number one continued, “I didn’t play many sets, but I was always going to play some sets last week and this week.”
“I have extra motivation because I’m excited to play in the Olympics at Roland Garros in two weeks, and I’m happy to be playing on clay.”
