Luka Doncic wins 2024 ESPY Award for Best NBA Player

Doncic finished the 2023-24 season with 33.9 points per game, 9.2 rebounds per game and 9.8 assists per game.

Dallas —On Thursday night, Luka Doncic, a guard for the Dallas Mavericks, added an ESPY to his growing list of accomplishments.

Best NBA Player went to the league’s leading scorer. With assistance from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, ESPN revealed the winner before to the ESPYs. Doncic faced off against forward Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics, center Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets (who defeated Doncic for MVP), and guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Doncic averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game at the end of the 2023–24 campaign.

Doncic led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals throughout the postseason and put on a spectacular performance. He led the NBA in points (635), rebounds (208), and assists (178) at the conclusion of the postseason. He’s the only player in NBA history to hold the top spot in each of those three categories at the end of the playoffs. The same thing happened the previous year, when Nikola Jokic of Denver accomplished the feat.

Doncic also became a member of a very exclusive group of players who scored 3,000 points in a single season. With his 28 points in Game 5 against the Boston Celtics in the season finale, he finished with 3,005 points overall, including the playoffs.

In doing so, he became the eleventh player ever. Michael Jordan recorded ten of these seasons, Wilt Chamberlain five, and nine other players—Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Harden, Bob McAdoo, Rick Barry, Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, and now Doncic—have each accomplished it once.

Doncic traveled abroad following the NBA Finals in an attempt to assist Slovenia in earning a spot in the Paris Olympics. In the qualifying round, the Greece squad led by Giannis Antetokounmpo defeated Doncic and Slovenia.

During the offseason, the Mavericks have been attempting to assemble a team around Doncic and Kyrie Irving, his running partner in the backcourt. Among them are Naji Marshall, Quentin Grimes, and Golden State Warriors four-time NBA Champion Klay Thompson. Earlier this week, the three additions to the Mavericks were announced:
