Lexi Thompson skipping Amundi Evian Championship, an LPGA major, once again
At the Amundi Evian Championship this year, Lexi Thompson will not be competing. Her absence isn’t all that shocking considering that she didn’t participate in the event in 2020 due to the pandemic, and she last appeared in it in 2019.
She declared at the U.S. Women’s Open that 2024 would be her last full season on the circuit, and since then, she has finished in the top 10.
She was defeated by Lilia Vu in a playoff at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Thompson was three shots behind going into the final round at Sahalee Country Club in the most recent KPMG Women’s PGA. She was eliminated from contention on Sunday after a startling front-nine 43, but she returned home in 31 to secure a top-10 result, earning her an invitation to return to the KPMG the following year, should she so choose.
After the rollercoaster round, Thompson, who was still feeling very positive, stated, “It was just a tale of two nines.”
Thompson and Brooke Henderson shared seventh place at the Dow Championship. She will play her next match at the Dana Open in Sylvania, Ohio, following a two-week break.
Regarding the Evian, Thompson has competed in the competition multiple times but has not returned since criticizing the course on Instagram in 2019 and essentially stating that well-taken photos went unrewarded.
She wrote, “After missing the cut, I’m actually grateful that I don’t have to put myself through that for another two days.” “Evian, you’re a lovely place, but there are just too many bad breaks with good shots for me. I’m going to have to leave.”
Later in the day, Thompson took down the initial message, stating that she wanted to dispel any misunderstanding. Part of the new post said:
“I merely meant to express my dissatisfaction at not performing well in a major tournament and the unlucky bounces that we all experience when playing this absurd game of golf. It wasn’t meant to be hurtful in any way. Although it hasn’t been my course of choice in recent years, some girls are playing really well, and I wish them well this weekend.
Since then, she has not returned.
The AIG Women’s British Open, which takes place at the Old Course at St. Andrews from August 22–25, is the season’s fifth and final major, and Thompson will play in it.
