CINCINNATI — In a move that signals confidence in his resurgence, the Cincinnati Reds have signed Jose Barrero to a 4-year, $18 million contract extension. The deal comes on the heels of an outstanding performance in 2025, both at the plate and in the field, securing Barrero’s place in the team’s long-term plans.
The 27-year-old utility player, known for his speed, defensive prowess, and once-promising bat, has undergone a transformation that has Reds fans excited. Barrero began the 2025 season with Triple-A Louisville, where he impressed with a .299 batting average, four home runs, five doubles, a triple, and 13 RBIs in just 23 games. His offensive surge, along with his continued defensive versatility at both shortstop and center field, earned him a call-up to the majors — and ultimately, a contract extension.
“It’s about competing every day and winning,” Barrero said of his mindset. “That’s the mentality, and that’s what I’ve been focused on. I’m thankful for this opportunity, and I’m going to give everything I have to help this team.”
Reds’ Manager David Bell spoke highly of Barrero’s growth, noting that his offensive improvements have allowed him to contribute in meaningful ways both at the plate and in the field. “Jose has really stepped up,” Bell said. “He’s worked hard, especially with the adjustments to his swing. Defensively, he’s been outstanding, and offensively, he’s putting up the kind of numbers we knew he was capable of.”
Barrero’s Journey with the Reds
Barrero’s story in Cincinnati has had its ups and downs. After being hailed as the Reds’ top prospect, Barrero debuted with the team in 2020, but his offensive struggles held him back. Over parts of four seasons, he managed a .186 batting average across 139 MLB games. Despite his struggles at the plate, Barrero’s defensive skills — particularly his range at shortstop and ability to steal bases — kept him in the conversation as a key part of the team’s future.
Last season, Barrero spent the year in the Texas Rangers’ organization, continuing to work on his swing and overall approach. That development, combined with his solid showing at Triple-A Louisville, convinced the Reds to bring him back into the fold.

Barrero’s return to the big leagues has been a welcome one, as he quickly proved that he’s a different player now. “It’s a new mindset, a new approach,” Barrero said. “I’m enjoying the game more, and I’m playing with more confidence than ever before.”
The Deal
The Reds clearly believe in Barrero’s potential, as reflected in the contract extension that keeps him in a Reds uniform through 2029. The 4-year, $18 million deal includes a club option for 2029, providing flexibility for the team as Barrero continues to develop.
The decision to extend Barrero also aligns with the Reds’ broader strategy of locking up young talent who show promise, especially after a season of rebuilding and player development. General Manager Nick Krall highlighted Barrero’s versatility and work ethic as key reasons for the extension. “Jose’s skillset, along with his approach to the game, gives us confidence he’ll continue to grow into a key contributor for this team,” Krall said.
Looking Ahead
For Reds fans, Barrero’s extension represents both continuity and optimism. The deal locks in a player with a high ceiling who could help anchor the team’s middle infield or serve as a valuable asset in a utility role. Barrero’s ability to perform in multiple positions provides the team with flexibility and depth, crucial for a team looking to contend in the coming years.
With the 2025 season already showing promise, Barrero is eager to prove that the Reds’ faith in him is well-placed. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help this team win,” he said.
As the Reds continue to build around their young core, Barrero’s extension serves as a statement that the franchise is committed to nurturing homegrown talent and rewarding those who put in the work.
