BREAKING: Yankees Make Bold Decision, Remove $8.6 Million Pitcher From Closer Role

The New York Yankees have officially made a major bullpen shakeup, removing Devin Williams from the closer role after a string of rough outings to open the 2025 season. The move comes after Williams blew a save opportunity against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night, allowing three runs in the ninth inning that turned a 2-1 Yankees lead into a 4-2 defeat.

Williams, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in an offseason trade, has struggled badly in his first month in pinstripes. In 10 appearances, he posted a disastrous 11.25 ERA, allowing 10 earned runs in just eight innings. His control issues—seven walks against only eight strikeouts—made it impossible for manager Aaron Boone to keep him in the high-leverage closer spot.

In his place, Boone announced that Luke Weaver will take over closing duties immediately. Weaver has been nearly flawless early in the season, tossing 13 scoreless innings across 11 games, while racking up two saves and striking out 13 batters.

Boone acknowledged the change was necessary, stating,

“We believe Devin is an important part of our team, but right now, we need him to work through his struggles without the pressure of closing games. Luke has earned this opportunity.”

Williams is expected to pitch in lower-leverage situations as he works to regain his form. The Yankees remain confident he can return to his dominant self, but for now, Weaver will lead the bullpen as the team eyes a return to the top of the standings.

The Yankees are set to continue their series against Toronto with a doubleheader on Sunday, with Weaver ready to close if needed.
