REPORT: Reds Predicted To Acquire $6 Million Pitcher In Blockbuster Trade

The Cincinnati Reds could be making a big move to bolster their bullpen, with Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan emerging as a potential target in a blockbuster deal. According to Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller, Cincinnati is a strong candidate to land Finnegan, who is earning $6 million this season.

The Reds’ starting rotation—anchored by Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and Brady Singer—has been stellar, but the bullpen remains an area that could use reinforcement, especially in high-leverage situations. With Alexis Díaz off to an inconsistent start and no clear backup closer, Cincinnati could find itself in need of a reliable ninth-inning option down the stretch.

“Save for an implosion against Boston on Opening Day, Luke Jackson has been more than serviceable thus far for Texas,” Miller originally wrote, highlighting the need for late-inning security. Apply that logic to the Reds, and it becomes clear: a proven arm like Finnegan’s would be a major asset in a postseason race.

Through the early part of the 2025 season, Finnegan has been lights out, tallying eight saves with a 1.86 ERA over 9 2/3 innings. His consistent dominance could give Cincinnati the lockdown closer it’s lacked since last year’s bullpen shuffle.

The question remains whether the Nationals are ready to move on from Finnegan. While they’re not seen as postseason favorites, their talented young roster could keep them competitive into July. But if Washington does decide to sell, the Reds have the farm system depth and motivation to make a compelling offer.

If the deal goes through, Finnegan could be the final piece in Cincinnati’s pursuit of a deep playoff run.
