BLOCKBUSTER TRADE: Texas Rangers Land Cardinals’ All-Star Closer in Blockbuster Bullpen Trade to Boost World Series Hopes

The Texas Rangers have officially addressed one of their biggest early-season weaknesses by acquiring All-Star closer Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals in a blockbuster trade.

Texas, looking to return to the World Series for the second time in three seasons, made a bold move to upgrade their bullpen — which had struggled to a collective 4.37 ERA, eighth-worst in MLB. Helsley, who had spent his entire career with the Cardinals, brings instant credibility and firepower to the back end of the Rangers’ relief corps.

In six appearances this season, Helsley posted a 3.00 ERA, outperforming Rangers closer Luke Jackson, who held a 4.50 ERA over seven outings. The trade allows Jackson to return to his longtime role as a setup man — a move that instantly deepens and stabilizes the Texas bullpen.

Helsley is coming off a career year in 2024, leading all of baseball with 49 saves while making 62 appearances, nearly doubling his previous high.

With this acquisition, the Rangers have signaled their intent to go all-in once again. In a wide-open American League, their revamped bullpen could be the difference in making another deep October run.
