In a stunning late-offseason twist, the New York Rangers have lost one of their most highly anticipated young stars before he ever suited up in blue. Top prospect winger Gabe Perreault, who had recently signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Rangers, has reversed his commitment and will now join the Colorado Avalanche.
Perreault, the 19-year-old standout and 2023 first-round pick, had been expected to make an immediate impact in New York following his departure from Boston College. But after sudden interest and conversations with the Avalanche front office, Perreault made the unexpected decision to head west.
“This was never something I thought I’d be doing,” Perreault said. “The Rangers have done so much for me. But the opportunity in Colorado — the people, the vision, the chance to grow with a winning culture — it just felt right.”

The decision comes as a major blow to the Rangers, who had seen Perreault as a key part of their youth movement and future top-six forward group. He had joined the team just weeks ago and was already drawing internal buzz for his playmaking ability and high hockey IQ.
According to sources close to the situation, Colorado’s late push included conversations with head coach Jared Bednar and several veteran players, as well as a detailed developmental plan that convinced Perreault he’d have both the support and the opportunity to thrive immediately.
“This wasn’t about backing out — it was about listening to my gut,” Perreault said. “Colorado sees me as a part of their next generation. That kind of belief means everything.”
Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland called the signing a “massive win” for the organization.
“Gabe is a game-changing player,” MacFarland said. “What he brings in skill, vision, and hockey sense is exactly what we’re looking to build around as we evolve.”
The Rangers have yet to issue a formal statement, though multiple sources inside the organization acknowledged frustration and surprise at the sudden flip. One front-office member described it as “deeply disappointing.”
Still, for the Avalanche, it’s another statement move in their continued bid to remain among the NHL’s elite — and for Gabe Perreault, it’s a bold leap into a new future.
