BREAKING: Austin Hays Returns from IL and Immediately Lifts Reds Offense, Providing Hope After Slow Start to 2025 Season

The Cincinnati Reds got a much-needed boost Thursday as outfielder Austin Hays officially returned from the injured list and rejoined the big-league club following a successful rehab stint with Triple-A Louisville.

Hays, who had been sidelined since the end of spring training with a mild left calf strain, wasted no time getting back into form during his brief stay in Louisville. He picked up six hits in three games, including a double and a home run, showing he’s ready to contribute immediately.

His return couldn’t have come at a better time. The Reds’ offense has been ice cold, slashing just .206/.267/.329 on the season — dead last in the majors with a 63 wRC+. Outside of two big games, they’ve averaged just 1.75 runs per contest. That lack of production has overshadowed a stellar performance from the pitching staff, which ranks third in rotation ERA (2.81) and FIP (2.85).

In his first game back on Thursday, Hays started in left field and delivered a pair of hits, including an RBI single that helped the Reds snap a three-game losing streak. His presence in the lineup brings much-needed stability and veteran leadership, especially with Matt McLain still on the IL and Gavin Lux holding things down at second base.

After a strong spring in which he hit .310 with 14 RBI, Hays is hoping to carry that momentum into the regular season. His 2024 campaign was marred by injuries while splitting time between Baltimore and Philadelphia, but early signs in 2025 suggest he’s ready for a resurgence.

As the Reds return to Great American Ball Park with a 6-8 record, Thursday’s win — and Hays’ return — may be exactly what the team needed to turn the corner.
