In a move that has sent ripples across Major League Baseball, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has secured an unexpected All-Star addition to the roster, acquiring Austin Riley from the Atlanta Braves. The trade addresses the Yankees’ long-standing third base dilemma and adds a major power threat to the middle of their lineup.
Despite the Yankees already fielding a strong offensive squad in 2025, the third base position remained a glaring hole with Oswaldo Cabrera filling in temporarily and DJ LeMahieu still rehabbing from an injury. Cashman, known for his bold moves, didn’t hesitate to pursue Riley, a two-time All-Star who has been a key player for the Braves since his debut.
Riley, 28, is in the midst of a long-term contract that runs through 2032, giving the Yankees not just a temporary solution, but a foundational piece for years to come. With his right-handed power and solid postseason resume, Riley brings the kind of experience and stability the Yankees have been seeking at the hot corner.

The trade package sent to Atlanta includes top Yankees prospect Spencer Jones, along with other minor league players. While Jones is a promising talent, his strikeout issues made him a less critical piece for the Yankees in this deal.
This acquisition comes after the Yankees previously signed Max Fried from the Braves, and Cashman’s willingness to pursue more Braves talent signals a strategic effort to build a championship contender. With Riley now in the fold, the Yankees have solidified their lineup and increased their chances of success this season and beyond.
Cashman’s surprise move makes it clear: the Yankees are all-in on 2025.
