What was shaping up to be a powerhouse offseason for South Carolina women’s basketball has now taken a surprising turn.
Just days after landing superstar scorer Ta’Niya Latson from Florida State, head coach Dawn Staley confirmed today that MiLaysia Fulwiley — one of the most electrifying young players in the nation and a fan favorite in Columbia — is leaving the program and entering the NCAA transfer portal.
“It’s a tough loss,” Staley admitted in Wednesday’s press conference. “MiLaysia is a rare talent. We’ve loved having her in this program, and we wish her nothing but success wherever she lands.”
Fulwiley, known for her flashy handles, fearless drives, and highlight-reel plays, captured hearts across the country last season. But with Latson’s arrival and Raven Johnson reaffirming her stay, the Gamecocks’ backcourt suddenly became more crowded — and Fulwiley’s future role became uncertain.

The decision marks a significant setback for the Gamecocks, who were expected to dominate not only with star power but depth. Now, they’ll move forward without one of their brightest young stars — and fans are already mourning the loss.
“South Carolina was home,” Fulwiley said in a heartfelt statement. “But I believe it’s time for me to find a place where I can fully grow into the player and leader I know I can be.”
While her next destination remains unknown, the buzz around her future is already heating up. Powerhouse programs are expected to line up for a shot at landing her.
As South Carolina gears up for a title run with new additions, Fulwiley will be writing a new chapter — one that could still lead to greatness, just in a different jersey.
