Luke Larsen is back in purple and gold — and this time, he’s returning with a renewed sense of purpose.
After briefly entering the NCAA transfer portal earlier this year, the veteran punter has officially withdrawn his name and is rejoining the East Carolina Pirates for one final ride. The announcement brought relief and excitement to Pirate Nation, who have embraced the 32-year-old Australian as a symbol of grit, maturity, and unwavering commitment.
“East Carolina is the only place I feel at home,” Larsen said in a heartfelt statement. “This program, this university, and this community have given me so much. I promise to give this team my absolute best every single day.”

Larsen’s return injects experience and leadership into a young ECU squad preparing for a critical season in the American Athletic Conference. Known for his booming leg and steady presence, Larsen has become a fan favorite since joining the program in 2020, and his decision to come back is being hailed as a major win for head coach Mike Houston and his staff.
“Luke is the definition of a Pirate,” Houston said. “He brings leadership, toughness, and a professionalism that lifts everyone around him. We’re lucky to have him back for one more year.”
With his eyes set on helping ECU contend in 2025, Larsen’s return isn’t just a feel-good story — it’s a statement. He’s not just coming back to play. He’s coming back to leave a legacy.
And in his own words: “There’s unfinished business in Greenville.”
