The First Power Rankings of the Season Have Finally Been Released: Defending Champs Hold On to Top Spot

By Will Leitch | April 6, 2025

With Opening Day now behind us, the first Power Rankings of the 2025 MLB season are here. Teams have started strong, while others are facing early struggles, but it’s still too early to draw firm conclusions. The rankings provide a snapshot of how teams are faring after the first week and a half of the season.

Compiled by MLB.com contributors, with insights from Will Leitch, the rankings reflect how teams are performing, and where they stand as the season takes shape.

  1. Dodgers (Last Week: 1)
The defending champs are off to a solid start, even as early talk about a potential 117-win season settles down. With Freddie Freeman on the IL after an unusual injury, the focus for the Dodgers remains on staying healthy for the long run and gearing up for October.
  2. Phillies (Last Week: 2)
Bryce Harper’s early struggles at the plate haven’t slowed the Phillies. Harper remains vocal, using his platform to call out the criticism aimed at the Dodgers, demonstrating the leadership that will be vital for Philly throughout the year.
  3. Yankees (Last Week: 8)
The Yankees have surged with big performances from Aaron Judge and a breakout year for Anthony Volpe. If Volpe continues to play at this level, an All-Star selection could be on the horizon for him.
  4. Padres (Last Week: 9)
San Diego has bounced back after their first loss of the season, with Jackson Merrill’s outstanding play leading the charge. His .429 batting average and two home runs have helped elevate the Padres early on.
  5. Rangers (Last Week: 10)
The Rangers are proving they’re a force when limiting their opponents to three runs or fewer. However, some of their key hitters, including Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, have had slow starts.
  6. Cubs (Last Week: 13)
Matthew Boyd has found success in Chicago, posting 11 scoreless innings to start his Cubs tenure. His solid start, along with his two-year, $29 million deal, is looking like a great investment for the team.
  7. Diamondbacks (Last Week: 6)
Ketel Marte’s hamstring injury is a setback, especially after he signed a massive extension. It’s the third time he’s been sidelined for a similar injury, and the D-backs will be hoping for a speedy recovery.
  8. Giants (Last Week: 21)
The Giants have been a surprise so far this season. Their defense has been a key factor in their early success, and players like Wilmer Flores are contributing power at the plate.
  9. Mets (Last Week: 9)
Pete Alonso has been on fire, and after a challenging offseason, he’s closing in on the franchise’s all-time home run record. His hot streak is a good sign for the Mets early on.
  10. Red Sox (Last Week: 7)
Alex Bregman has had an outstanding start to his time with the Red Sox, including a solid performance in his Fenway debut. His bat could be a major asset for the Sox this season.
