BREAKING: Governor Henry McMaster Praises Gamecocks Women’s Basketball as “The Beating Heart of Columbia” — Offers Heartfelt Words of Encouragement

April 7, 2025 – Columbia, SC — Following a season filled with grit, growth, and greatness, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has offered high praise and heartfelt advice to the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team, calling them “the beating heart of Columbia.”

Though the Gamecocks fell short in Sunday’s NCAA championship game against UConn, Governor McMaster emphasized that their journey and impact reach far beyond the court.

“This team showed us courage, class, and character. They reminded us that strength isn’t just about winning—it’s about how you respond when things don’t go your way,” McMaster said during a public statement Monday afternoon. “You played for each other, for your city, and for your state. And we are all better because of it.”

The governor went on to share a message directly to the team:

“You have nothing to hang your heads about. You’ve lit up our state with joy all season long. My advice? Keep your heads high and your hearts even higher. Never let one game define your legacy. What matters is the way you inspired us—through your hustle, your heart, and your humility.”

McMaster also praised Coach Dawn Staley, saying, “She has built more than a program—she has built a family. And that family has lifted Columbia, and all of South Carolina, to new heights.”

He concluded his statement by assuring the team that their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed:

“You are champions in every sense of the word. And as long as that garnet and black is worn with pride, we’ll always be cheering you on. The heart of this city beats stronger because of you.”

Social media quickly lit up with appreciation for the governor’s words, with fans echoing his sentiments:
“He gets it.”
“Beautifully said, Governor.”
“This is more than basketball—it’s about pride and purpose.”
