Kansas City Royals infielder Jonathan India wasted no time getting back to work after a scary moment during Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians. Despite being struck in the batting helmet by a high-speed fastball, India returned to the lineup Monday, delivering an impressive performance in Milwaukee.
In his role as KC’s leadoff hitter, India went 3-for-5 at the plate, driving in two runs to help the Royals secure an 11-1 victory over the Brewers. His resilience and determination earned widespread respect from teammates and coaches alike.
“It’s something I’ve never seen in my career,” said Royals captain Salvador Perez. “He’s one of the toughest guys I’ve ever met. Getting hit in the head with a 99 to 100 mph fastball and coming back the way he did—that’s just incredible.”

India sustained the dangerous hit-by-pitch in the ninth inning of Sunday’s loss, when a 98.9 mph cutter from Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase struck the ear flap of his helmet and grazed his face. The Royals immediately removed him from the game for evaluation, but India insisted he felt fine and was eager to return to action.
Manager Matt Quatraro noted that India was adamant about playing Monday, showing no signs of concussion symptoms or broken bones. “With a guy like that who is ultra-competitive, it sends a great message to our team about what it takes to be a championship-caliber player,” Quatraro said.
Acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in an offseason trade, India has quickly endeared himself to the Royals and their fanbase. His on-base ability and leadership have already made a significant impact, proving why KC was eager to bring him in.
“He’s a warrior,” said teammate Maikel Garcia. “To take a fastball to the face one day and play the way he did the next—it’s unbelievable.”
