BREAKING: Spencer Smallman Re-Signs with Washington Capitals on a Two-Year, Two-Way Contract to Bolster Hershey Bears’ Calder Cup Title Defense

The Washington Capitals have secured forward Spencer Smallman with a two-year, two-way contract. The deal carries an average annual value (AAV) of $775,000 at the NHL level and $380,000 in the AHL.

Smallman’s Impact

The 28-year-old forward has been a key contributor for the Hershey Bears this season, tallying 33 points (nine goals, 24 assists) in 55 games. In his first year with Hershey, he is tied for second on the team in assists and ranks seventh in points. Both his 29 assists and 33 total points mark career highs in the AHL.

Previously, Smallman played for the Colorado Eagles in 2023-24, where he recorded 21 points (12 goals, nine assists) across 53 games. His 16.9% shooting percentage ranked second on the team, and he logged 53 penalty minutes. The year before, in 2022-23, he posted 26 points (13 goals, 13 assists) in 61 games, setting a personal AHL best for goals in a single season.

In 2021-22, Smallman played for the Chicago Wolves, where he notched 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 65 regular-season games. He also played a crucial role in the Wolves’ 2022 Calder Cup championship run, adding six points (two goals, four assists) in 18 playoff games.

AHL Experience and Future Outlook

Originally drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fifth round (138th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft, Smallman has accumulated 128 points (47 goals, 81 assists) over 299 AHL games with Hershey, Colorado, and the Charlotte Checkers. He has also registered seven points (three goals, four assists) in 26 career Calder Cup Playoff games.

The signing bolsters Hershey’s roster as they chase a historic third consecutive Calder Cup title. With Smallman’s experience and playmaking ability, the Bears look to continue their dominance in the AHL.
