In a significant move for their defensive future, the Minnesota Vikings have officially met with a versatile defender ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. With only four draft picks this year, every selection is critical for the Vikings, who are expected to prioritize defense, likely targeting a defensive back or an interior defensive lineman in the first round.
Zion Childress, a defensive back from Kentucky, has completed his visit with the Vikings, as well as with the Houston Texans, according to a source from The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler.

Childress, known for his flexibility, has played over 850 snaps across various roles, including nickel, box, and free safety positions. Starting at Texas State, he transferred to Kentucky for his final three years. In 2024, Childress posted career-highs with 55 tackles, six tackles for loss, two pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one sack over 12 games.
As a day-three draft prospect, Childress is highly valued for his versatility, capable of seamlessly shifting between linebacker and safety. His high football IQ, developed through his time as a former quarterback in high school, allows him to anticipate offensive plays with precision.
Under defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Minnesota is looking for players who can adapt to various roles, making Childress an ideal fit as either a safety or outside linebacker. He may also contribute on special teams, particularly in kickoff coverage.
With two of the Vikings’ four picks on day three, securing hidden gems like Childress could play a crucial role in the team’s future success.
