The New York Giants have officially signed Jameis Winston (#2), the former No. 1 overall pick, as they continue to reshape their quarterback room for the 2025 NFL season. Winston, who previously played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, and Cleveland Browns, brings veteran leadership, experience, and competition to the team’s offense.
Winston’s Role with the Giants
During his introductory press conference, Winston shared that his role was presented as an opportunity to help improve the quarterback position.
“My role was explained as an opportunity within the quarterback position that the team is looking to strengthen,” Winston said. “I signed up for that because I’m always looking to improve and be the best version of myself.”
With the Giants recently signing Russell Wilson and holding the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming draft, Winston’s exact position on the depth chart remains uncertain. However, he made it clear that he is ready to contribute in any way the team needs.
A Quarterback Room in Transition
The Giants’ quarterback situation remains fluid, especially with speculation that they may select a young quarterback in the draft. Despite potential competition, Winston is focused on seizing the opportunity in front of him.
“I knew there was a chance they’d sign another free agent or even draft a quarterback,” Winston said. “But that’s their business. My business is today, and today I have the privilege of officially becoming a Giant.”
Veteran Experience and Leadership
Throughout his career, Winston has played multiple roles, from full-time starter to backup and mentor. He emphasized the valuable lessons he has learned from veteran quarterbacks like Drew Brees, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Derek Carr, and Deshaun Watson.
“One of the best experiences of my career was spending a year with Drew Brees—watching him, learning from him, and seeing what it takes to be an elite NFL quarterback,” Winston shared. “If I’m asked to mentor a young quarterback, I’ll embrace that responsibility.”
Looking Ahead

With Winston and Wilson now on the roster, the Giants have added valuable experience at quarterback. Whether Winston competes for playing time or serves as a mentor to a future draft pick, his presence brings depth and leadership to the team.
“I don’t believe in coincidences,” Winston said. “The Giants saw an opportunity to improve the quarterback room, and I saw an opportunity to be part of something special.”
As the Giants continue their offseason moves, all eyes will be on the team’s quarterback battle heading into training camp.
