BREAKING: Havelock Defensive Lineman Donovan Darden Moves ECU Up His List After Impressive Spring Practice Visit

Havelock, NC – East Carolina University (ECU) is making a strong push for local talent, and their latest efforts appear to be paying off. Havelock High School defensive lineman Donovan Darden recently attended ECU’s spring practice, and the visit has significantly boosted the Pirates’ standing in his recruitment.

Darden, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive standout, has emerged as a highly sought-after prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. Known for his versatility, he excels both as a defensive end and an outside linebacker. During his junior season, he racked up 46 tackles (31 solo), 9.0 tackles for loss, one sack, two interceptions, and six passes defended. He also showcased his athleticism on offense, playing quarterback and rushing for two touchdowns.

ECU Making a Strong Impression

Darden’s visit to ECU’s spring practice gave him an up-close look at the program’s culture, coaching staff, and defensive system. Sources indicate that he was particularly impressed with the energy and intensity of the Pirates’ practices, as well as the staff’s commitment to player development.

While ECU was already in the mix for Darden’s recruitment, his recent visit has elevated the Pirates as a serious contender. “The coaching staff really stood out,” Darden said following his visit. “I liked the way they coach, and I can see myself fitting in with what they’re building.”

Competing Programs

ECU is far from the only school vying for Darden’s commitment. He holds offers from West Virginia, Boston College, South Carolina, Missouri, Charlotte, James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion, and UConn.

As of now, Darden has official visits scheduled to Pittsburgh (June 13-15) and South Carolina (June 21-23). However, with ECU making a strong late push, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Pirates earn an official visit as well.

What’s Next?

Darden is expected to narrow down his choices in the coming months as he evaluates his options. ECU’s emphasis on recruiting in-state talent could work to their advantage, especially with Havelock being a program that has produced Division I athletes in the past.

With his decision likely coming before the start of his senior season, the Pirates will continue to make their case for keeping one of North Carolina’s top defensive prospects close to home.

Stay tuned for further updates on Darden’s recruitment as ECU looks to secure a key addition to its 2025 class.
