FOR UCONN FAMILY AND FANS ONLY: UConn Faces a Significant Setback as Their Basketball and Football Enthusiast, Generous Philanthropist, Visionary Business Leader, Devoted Family Man, and Champion of Education Passes Away at 86

The UConn family is mourning the loss of one of its most dedicated supporters, Robert G. Burton, Sr., a longtime donor, successful business leader, and passionate advocate for UConn basketball and football. Burton, whose generosity and vision helped shape the university’s athletic programs, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2025, at his home in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 86.

A pillar of the UConn community, Burton was known for his sharp business insight, unwavering commitment to education, and lifelong love of sports. His transformative contributions to the university’s athletic programs and student-athlete development made a lasting impact that will be felt for generations.

Born on April 4, 1938, in Pontiac, Michigan, Burton was raised in West Frankfort, Illinois, where he developed a strong work ethic and passion for sports. A standout athlete at West Frankfort High School, he earned a football scholarship to Murray State University, where he completed his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1962. That same year, he was drafted by both the San Francisco 49ers (NFL) and the Buffalo Bills (AFL).

Although an injury cut short his athletic career, Burton remained dedicated to education, earning a Master’s degree from Tennessee Technological University and completing postgraduate studies at the University of Alabama, where he developed a deep love for Crimson Tide football. He also received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Connecticut and Murray State University for his contributions to business and education.

A Connecticut resident since 1977, Burton was a staunch advocate for student-athletes and a generous benefactor to UConn. His $2.5 million donation led to the creation of the Burton Family Football Complex, a state-of-the-art training facility that played a key role in the program’s rise. Over the years, he and his family donated over $7 million to UConn athletics, including scholarships for student-athletes pursuing business careers. One of these scholarships was named in honor of his son, Michael G. Burton, a former UConn football captain.

Burton is survived by his wife, Paula Burton; his sister Earlene Schlichter; his sons, Robert G. Burton, Jr. (Stacey), Michael G. Burton (Tiffany), and Joseph Burton (Calico); and nine grandchildren, along with his loyal dog, Buddy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Verna Lee, and his brother, Larry.

A private memorial service was held in Greenwich, Connecticut, for close family and friends. His unwavering support of UConn will be remembered forever by those who had the privilege of knowing him and benefiting from his generosity.
