BREAKING: Broncos Make a Bold Yet Questionable $23 Million Investment in a Veteran Tight End Amid Concerns Over Fit, Offensive Strategy, and Long-Term Impact

The Denver Broncos appeared to have found a solution to one of their most glaring offensive weaknesses by signing two-time Pro Bowl tight end Evan Engram to a two-year, $23 million deal on March 12, which includes $16.5 million in guaranteed money. However, not everyone is convinced that the nine-year veteran is the right fit for Denver’s long-term offensive plans.

Critics Question Engram’s Impact in Sean Payton’s Scheme

The Broncos have lacked a legitimate threat at the tight end position since Sean Payton took over as head coach. Engram’s signing was seen as an attempt to fill the versatile “Joker” role that is crucial to Payton’s offensive system.

Yet, ESPN’s Ben Solak was among those skeptical of the move, calling it one of the NFL free agent deals he “didn’t love.”

“(Engram) adds the most value when he’s a high-volume underneath receiver,” Solak wrote. “On days in which Courtland Sutton demands high volume, or on which the Broncos want to be a run-heavy team … Engram could be obsolete. He doesn’t create big plays downfield or after the catch, and he isn’t an impactful blocker.”

While the contract isn’t necessarily a financial overreach, there’s uncertainty surrounding whether Engram can truly revitalize Denver’s tight end production.

Engram’s Rocky 2024 Season and Jaguars Exit

Before landing in Denver, Engram was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in a salary cap move on March 6, freeing up approximately $6 million for Jacksonville.

Despite being just one season removed from a career-best 114 receptions and 963 yards in 2023, Engram’s 2024 campaign was a major letdown. He played only nine games, tallying 47 receptions, 365 yards, and a single touchdown before landing on injured reserve with a torn labrum.

Jacksonville struggled to a 4-13 record, leading to the firing of head coach Doug Pederson and the hiring of Liam Coen as his replacement.

What Engram’s Signing Says About Broncos’ Draft Plans

Engram’s arrival strongly suggests that the Broncos are planning to target a running back in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, where they hold the No. 20 overall pick.

With the tight end position addressed in free agency, Denver may now shift its focus toward bolstering its rushing attack. However, taking a running back in the first round remains a risky move, and the 2025 draft class is loaded with depth at the position.

Engram, at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, still has plenty to prove as he enters his ninth NFL season. While his career earnings will surpass $74.4 million after this contract, whether he can justify Denver’s investment and become a difference-maker in Payton’s offense remains to be seen.
