The New York Yankees have brought back right-hander Cody Poteet in a cash deal with the Chicago Cubs, just months after including him in the trade for Cody Bellinger.
After being designated for assignment (DFA’d) by the Cubs as part of their Opening Day roster changes, Poteet quickly became a target for the Yankees, who saw an opportunity to bolster their pitching depth. Instead of waiting for him to clear waivers, New York moved swiftly to finalize a small cash transaction to bring him back.
Poteet, who was sent to Chicago in December, had an impressive 2.22 ERA over 24 1/3 innings last season despite injuries. He also delivered a standout performance against the eventual World Series champion Dodgers in June, showcasing his potential as a reliable rotation or bullpen option.
Yankees Reinforce Pitching Depth Amid Roster Uncertainty
With Poteet back in the fold, the Yankees add another right-handed arm to a pitching staff that has undergone multiple adjustments. Ryan Yarbrough and Brent Headrick remain key left-handed options, but New York preferred to balance the mix rather than rely on three lefties for bulk innings.

While the team’s primary focus has been filling Oswald Peraza’s bench spot, bringing back Poteet provides a much-needed insurance policy for the pitching staff. With uncertainty surrounding Tyler Matzek’s return and the Yankees already stretching their depth, reacquiring Poteet was a smart, low-risk move to ensure stability.
The Yankees, who were forced to scratch and claw for pitching reinforcements throughout the offseason, weren’t going to let a familiar and proven arm slip away—and now, Poteet is officially back in pinstripes.
