The New York Yankees have made a major splash in free agency, signing former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette to a five-year, $147 million contract. The deal marks a significant move for the Yankees, who have struggled to find consistency at third base.
With DJ LeMahieu recovering from injury and Oswaldo Cabrera providing limited production, the Yankees sought a long-term solution at the hot corner. Although Bichette has primarily played shortstop, the Yankees believe he can transition smoothly to third base.
“Bo Bichette is a premier hitter and competitor,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said in a statement. “We are confident in his ability to make the adjustment to third base and elevate our lineup.”
Bichette, a two-time All-Star, struggled in 2024, slashing .225/.277/.322, but he posted a .306 batting average in 2023 and has twice led the American League in hits. The Yankees are banking on a strong bounce-back season from the 26-year-old.
“I’m excited for this new chapter,” Bichette said. “The Yankees have a winning culture, and I’m ready to contribute however I can.”

The move also fuels speculation that the Yankees may pursue Bichette’s close friend and former teammate, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., when he hits free agency. The Blue Jays attempted to extend Guerrero this offseason but failed to reach an agreement.
With Bichette in pinstripes, the Yankees’ infield now features Bichette, Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Paul Goldschmidt. The team remains aggressive in its pursuit of additional talent, signaling its commitment to another championship run.
