It has only been a few months since Gleyber Torres left the New York Yankees, but the former All-Star second baseman is already making it clear—he wants to come back. In a recent interview, Torres opened up about his deep emotional connection to the Yankees, admitting that no other team has ever felt like home the way New York does.
Torres’ Departure from the Yankees
Torres, 27, spent seven seasons in the Bronx, becoming a key piece of the Yankees’ infield. After joining the team in 2018, he quickly established himself as one of the league’s top young infielders, earning two All-Star selections and delivering clutch performances in the postseason. However, despite his impact, the Yankees opted not to extend his contract this past offseason.

When Torres hit free agency, many believed a reunion with New York was still possible. However, to his disappointment, the Yankees never made an offer. Instead, he signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Detroit Tigers, a move that he admits never truly felt right.
“I never got an offer from the Yankees,” Torres revealed in an interview. “It was tough because I love playing there. It’s the only place that feels like home to me.”
Struggles in Detroit & Longing for the Bronx
Since joining the Tigers, Torres has struggled to find his rhythm. While adjusting to a new clubhouse and environment, he has been candid about missing the energy of Yankee Stadium and the passionate fanbase that supported him for years.
“New York is different. The fans push you to be great every single day. There’s nothing like it,” Torres said. “Every time I step on the field, I still think about the Yankees. That’s where I grew up in this league.”
Torres’ struggles in Detroit only add to the speculation that a midseason trade or a future return to New York could be on the horizon. If the Yankees find themselves in need of an infield boost, Torres could be a prime candidate for a reunion.
Could a Yankees Reunion Happen?
The Yankees are currently moving forward with a new-look infield, but there have been some inconsistencies early in the season. If the team finds itself in contention and needs a reliable bat at second base, the front office could explore a deal to bring Torres back.
Despite his departure, Torres has maintained strong relationships with several Yankees players and remains close with the coaching staff. His public longing for a return could put pressure on both sides to find a way to make it happen.
“I don’t know what the future holds,” Torres admitted. “But if I ever get the chance to wear the pinstripes again, I would take it in a heartbeat.”
For now, Torres remains a Detroit Tiger, but his heart clearly still belongs in the Bronx. Whether or not the Yankees will welcome him back remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Gleyber Torres has never stopped being a Yankee at heart.
