BOOST: A Key Player Declares Herself Queen: A Game-Changing Transfer’s Overtime Heroics Lead the Wildcats to Their First Sweet 16 in Over Two Decades

Temira Poindexter Emerges as a Game-Changing Transfer for Kansas State Wildcats

Temira Poindexter lit up the court for the Kansas State women’s basketball team, knocking down eight three-pointers in an electrifying 80-79 overtime win against Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament’s second round. With every moment the Wildcats found themselves in trouble, the senior forward stepped up with jaw-dropping shots, propelling the team into the Sweet 16 for the first time in over 20 years.

Head coach Jeff Mittie expressed his pride in Poindexter—not just for her clutch performance, but also because of her decision to transfer. “I’m really proud of her because she transferred to us, and this was one of her reasons,” Mittie said. Poindexter spent her first three college seasons at Tulsa, where she averaged 16.9 points per game and earned all-conference honors, yet her postseason experience was limited to the WNIT. Determined to experience the thrill of March Madness, she chose Kansas State for her final year, emphasizing during recruitment her desire to join a team with a strong postseason pedigree.

After missing her first five shots against Kentucky, Poindexter found her rhythm, finishing the game with a game-high 24 points. Her heroics helped secure a historic win for the Wildcats, who now advance to face the winner of the No. 1 seed USC versus No. 9 seed Mississippi State matchup in the Sweet 16, set to take place on Saturday in Spokane, Washington.

Throughout the season, Poindexter has been a significant contributor for Kansas State, averaging 12.7 points and 2.9 rebounds while playing a key supporting role alongside Ayoka Lee and Serena Sundell. Standout performances—including a 24-point game at BYU and 23 points against Cincinnati—have built her confidence and prepared her to shoulder a larger role in critical moments.

Reflecting on the support from her teammates, Poindexter shared, “When my shots aren’t falling, my teammates come in, have my back, and tell me to keep shooting. That support is what lifts me up and gives me confidence.” Poindexter’s story isn’t just about individual accolades; it’s about her commitment to help the Wildcats make a deep run in March, proving that sometimes, the most impactful moves are those made for the greater good of the team.
