The Minnesota Vikings have found their running back of the future. In a strategic move to solidify their ground game, the Vikings selected Kansas standout Devin Neal in the 2025 NFL Draft, securing a dynamic playmaker with the potential to take over as their lead back.
A Perfect Fit for Minnesota’s Offense
Neal, a three-time 1,000-yard rusher at Kansas, brings speed, vision, and explosiveness to the Vikings’ backfield. Standing at 5’11” and 195 pounds, he possesses the agility to make defenders miss and the breakaway speed to create big plays. His ability to operate both as a runner and a receiver makes him a perfect fit for Minnesota’s zone-blocking scheme.

“We love what Devin brings to the table,” Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said. “His skill set complements our offense, and we see him as a long-term piece in our running back room.”
Immediate Role and Long-Term Potential
With Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason already on the roster, Neal will likely begin the season in a rotational role. However, his explosiveness and versatility give him the potential to emerge as Minnesota’s lead back in the near future.
One area where Neal shines is in the passing game. While he primarily ran screens and checkdowns at Kansas, he displayed reliable hands and an ability to make plays in space. The Vikings could use him similarly to Jones, splitting him out wide on occasion and utilizing him as a key checkdown option.
“Devin’s receiving ability adds another layer to our offense,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said. “He’s a guy who can create mismatches and make defenses pay.”
A Future Star in the Making
Neal’s selection mirrors the New Orleans Saints’ decision to draft Alvin Kamara despite already having Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram on the roster. Kamara eventually became the focal point of their offense—Neal could follow a similar trajectory in Minnesota.
While he may start his career in a complementary role, Devin Neal has all the tools to become the Vikings’ next star running back.
