Spring practice is underway in Tuscaloosa, and Alabama’s quarterback competition is taking an unexpected turn. Austin Mack, a transfer handpicked by Kalen DeBoer, has emerged as a serious contender for the starting job—putting returning veteran Ty Simpson in a tough spot.
Simpson’s Decision to Stay Now in Question
Simpson, who has spent three seasons with Alabama after signing under Nick Saban in 2022, was widely expected to take over as the Crimson Tide’s next starting quarterback following Jalen Milroe’s departure. However, DeBoer’s decision to bring in Mack from Washington has shaken up the depth chart.
Despite the opportunity to transfer after Saban’s retirement, Simpson remained loyal to Alabama. But instead of securing the QB1 role, he now faces competition from both Mack and highly-touted five-star freshman Keelon Russell.
DeBoer’s Transfer Making an Impact
Mack, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, played sparingly last season but was clearly brought in by DeBoer for more than just depth. While many assumed Simpson had the inside track to start, early reports suggest Mack is making a strong case for the job.
