According to sources, Staton’s departure was not his own decision, but rather a result of discussions with the UNC system’s interim president, Bill Roper. The move has sparked controversy, with accusations of meddling by the Board of Governors’ chair, Harry Smith.

Staton’s resignation marks the third executive departure from the UNC system in the first three months of 2025. Faculty members are expressing concern about the impact of these leadership changes on the university’s academic core.

“We are grateful for Chancellor Staton’s service to East Carolina University,” said UNC System President Bill Roper. “We appreciate his commitment to the university and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
