MAJOR_SETBACK: Washington Huskies Lose a Key Star to Transfer Portal, Reports Say

The Washington men’s basketball team has begun its offseason roster changes, as freshman guard Jase Butler has reportedly decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Butler, a four-star recruit from San Anselmo, Calif., is the first player from the 2024-25 Huskies squad to announce his departure—but likely not the last.

Initially, Butler verbally committed to Illinois in December 2023 before flipping to Washington following the hiring of head coach Danny Sprinkle. At the time, Butler expressed confidence in Sprinkle’s leadership and commitment to winning.

However, the 6-foot-4, 180-pound combo guard struggled to find consistent playing time in a crowded backcourt. He played in 18 games, averaging 1.9 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 10.6 minutes per contest. Despite showing flashes of defensive promise and recording a season-high eight points in a loss to Nevada, his role remained limited.

After missing two games in January due to a concussion, Butler saw even fewer opportunities on the court, failing to score in his final eight appearances.

On social media, Butler reshared a report from 247Sports’ Travis Branham, who cited Butler’s agent, Drake U’u, as confirming his decision.

The NCAA transfer portal officially opens on March 24, and Butler’s departure marks the beginning of what could be significant roster turnover for the Huskies. Washington is already set to lose several seniors, including Great Osobor, DJ Davis, Luis Kortright, and Tyree Ihenacho, while the futures of multiple other players remain uncertain.

Despite the departures, Washington is bringing in a highly ranked recruiting class, featuring McDonald’s All-American Niko Bundalo, four-star guards JJ Mandaquit and Courtland Muldrew, and junior-college transfer forward Mady Traore.
