The Chicago Cubs have made a major splash, officially acquiring 2022 Cy Young winner Sandy Alcántara from the Miami Marlins in a blockbuster trade. The move signals Chicago’s commitment to contending in 2025, adding an elite arm to their starting rotation.
Trade Details:
Cubs Receive:
- RHP Sandy Alcántara
Marlins Receive:
- RHP Javier Assad
- C Moises Ballesteros (Cubs’ No. 3 prospect)
- OF Kevin Alcántara (Cubs’ No. 6 prospect)
- OF Owen Caissie (Cubs’ No. 7 prospect)
Alcántara, 29, returns to full strength after missing the 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery. Early in 2025, he has looked dominant, flashing the velocity and movement that made him the best pitcher in the National League just three years ago.
“This is the type of move we felt was necessary to take the next step,” said Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer. “Adding an arm like Sandy gives us a legitimate ace for years to come.”
Marlins Continue Rebuild
For the Marlins, the trade aligns with their ongoing rebuild. They add Javier Assad, a capable major league starter, while also securing three of Chicago’s top young prospects. Ballesteros brings a promising bat behind the plate, Kevin Alcántara has a tantalizing mix of power and speed, and Caissie provides another high-upside outfield bat.

“This was not an easy decision,” Marlins GM Peter Bendix said. “Sandy has been the face of our pitching staff, but we feel this return sets us up well for the future.”
Cubs Go All-In
With this move, the Cubs double down on their win-now approach. Alcántara joins a rotation featuring Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga, giving Chicago a formidable pitching staff.
“This is a statement,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. “We’re here to win.”
The Cubs’ next focus will be strengthening their bullpen as they push toward October.
