With 12 teams, it is now easier than ever to qualify for the College Football Playoff. However, in only two weeks of play, Florida State went from being the overwhelming favorite to win the ACC title and a playoff contender to a 0-2 disaster that has all but ended its chances of winning a national championship.

The Seminoles’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs were severely damaged by their loss to unranked Georgia Tech in the Week 0 opener; however, another lackluster showing in their home opener versus Boston College has all but ended the team’s chances of winning the championship.

This is in line with the College Football Power Index computer prediction and rankings algorithm, which projects results by simulating teams’ games 20,000 times using team data.

According to the computer’s most recent calculations, after two games, the Seminoles have a meager 0.6 percent chance of winning the ACC Championship and a 0.7 percent probability of qualifying for the College Football Playoff.

With a 55.9 percent likelihood of making the postseason and an index prediction of winning 5.7 games this season—good for just 14th in the ACC—Florida State may be lucky to make it to a bowl game at all.

After dropping its first two games of the season, one-time ACC title favorite Florida State just saw its playoff hopes evaporate.

With a 9.6% chance of qualifying for the College Football Playoffs and a 6.5 percent chance of winning the ACC championship, the Seminoles’ chances of making the playoffs were already in jeopardy before to Monday night’s game.

The disappointment of Florida State’s early-season collapse is compounded by the fact that, only a year after being notably rejected from the semifinal as the ACC champion to conclude the 2023 season, the team was supposed to be in the running to qualify for the postseason.

After a 10-win season and the return of some of its greatest offensive skill players, Memphis, one of the top Group of Five teams, and a school anticipated to contend for the G5’s automatic postseason spot later this year await the Seminoles next.
