Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic’s long streak ends at the 2024 US Open
With Novak Djokovic’s early exit, a long-standing streak held by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic himself comes to an end at the US Open.
When Australia’s Alexei Popyrin eliminated Novak Djokovic in the third round of the 2024 US Open, it was a great shock. In an unexpected change of events at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the world No. 2 lost to the 28th-ranked Popyrin in four sets, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, and 6-4.
Djokovic, who won the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, will now finish the year without having won a single Grand Slam championship, which is extremely unusual and hasn’t happened since 2017. More importantly, Djokovic’s defeat marks the end of a chapter in tennis history.
For the first time since 2002, the storied “Big 3” of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic will not win any of the four major titles of the year—the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and US Open.
It’s important to remember that Federer, 41, left the professional tennis ranks in 2022 after winning 20 Grand Slam championships. The 38-year-old Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, looks to be wrapping up his remarkable career as he has only competed in six events this year, including the Olympics in Paris.

This means that Djokovic, 37, who has a record 24 Grand Slam victories, is the only one of this legendary trio currently actively participating in top-tier competition. But now he has to contend with a fresh group of athletes keen to leave their own marks.
Who have won the 2024 Grand Slams so far?
The Grand Slam season began in January as usual with the Australian Open, won by current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner of Italy. Three-ranked Carlos Alcaraz of Spain won on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Alcaraz won the Wimbledon tournament as well.
The last major of the season, the US Open, is happening right now. Jannik Sinner, who is still the overwhelming favorite to win, defeated Christopher O’Connell of Australia in straight sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) to move on to the fourth round.
